I have a scanner that works like a dream except for the fact that the underside of the glass has become foggy. I thought I would have to buy a new one until I found this video. Brilliant! Thank you!!!
Video was informative - when I went to lift the top half of my 4990 scanner the scanner "head" was caught on the locking mechanism (as the video mentions when reassembling the scanner). Thereʻs not enough clearance to push something in to slide the head forward, so I applied power and used my scanning program to activate a prescan -- then pulled the power cord on the scanner and froze the head halfway through the travel. Now the top half was free to open and easy to reassemble too! And yes the scanner works great and the focus plane was unchanged too. Success.
Thanks for this, I’ve been using my 4990 forever and have been putting off cleaning the underside of the glass for years because of the thought of the complexity of taking the scanner apart. Your quick video gave me the direction needed that the exploded diagram I found didn’t. On to cleaner scans & less post work.
Thank-you for this. Just what the doctor ordered. FYI; the travel lock needs to be in the UNLOCKED position. The forward appearance panel can be removed first, but it isn't necessary - the lower section pops up at 3 tabs, then lifts upward at the front.
I have an aging Epson V550 that I have used literally thousands of times, and it got a piece of black crud stuck to the underside of the glass in a prominent location. I looked for screws on the back, and not seeing any despaired of ever cleaning the thing. This video keyed me in to where to look (obvious, I know) and, using some screen cleaner and a new microfiber cloth, I was able to clean it up like new.
thanks very much for the tips on cleaning my 4990, didn't fancy messing about with it until I found this very straight forward and simple instruction on how to do it, thank you again.
Great tutorial!!! Everything done perfectly. Thanks a lot
I have the Perfection 4870 Pro, and by watching your video I figured out how to open my scanner, so thank you very much for the info video.
Thank you very much for taking the time to share that... I also had to clean the platter in the lid as well.... only 2 screws to remove and work your way around the slots to prise it out.... thanks again
priceless
Thank you, very useful !
Thanks for this instruction.
Awesome thanks!
What scanning software are you using?
the glass on the top/lid of my 4990 needs an inside cleaning. any instructions for that? I scan negatives, not prints.
I made a mistake in my last post about how many screws in the top platen in the lid... it's actually 5 not 2.
I finally accomplished what I'd needed, but the video was disappointing. First, the 'buttons' over the screws would not come off with even the stickiest of tape and couldn't be 'pried' out. I had to drill small holes in the 'buttons' and then left them out. Next, Beaker told us how to lift the top off, but for some reason, he did not demonstrate that. Please, Beaker, do better.
A useful video, thanks, but I thought the point of YouTube was to SHOW people things, not just describe them in a voice-over! Surely it wouldn't have been difficult to go through the steps for real, actually removing the top and showing the switch cables etc., rather than just telling us what you did? As they say, a picture (or in this case a video) is worth a thousand words ;-)
